Edward the Confessor: A Visitor to Worcester?

An interesting bit of detection…

worcestercl1's avatarWorcester Cathedral Library and Archive Blog

While listening to a lecture by Professor Simon Keyes of Cambridge, the leading authority on Anglo-Saxon charters, a passing reference to a charter from Worcester witnessed by Edward the Confessor caught my attention. It has always been said that the Anglo-Saxon king Edward the Confessor (reigned 1042-1066), unlike many later English rulers, never travelled as far north as Worcester. I feel this single charter written and witnessed in Worcester establishes that he did visit Worcester and the Cathedral at least once during his reign.

The evidence that Edward visited Worcester is based on a charter[1] dating from 1058. This charter, a grant of land in Norton, Worcestershire is to Dodda, a prominent thegn and landholder of the bishop of Worcester, Ealdred.  This charter is witnessed by Edward the Confessor.  After the…

Ravenna in Droitwich: a Hidden Gem

Earlier this week David Holden led a fascinating guided tour round the Sacred Heart church as part of the DAN Arts Week in Droitwich. He talked about the story of the church and its wonderful Venetian glass mosaics, which include as a major feature the life story of our local Saint Richard de Wych. The church was opened in  1921 and the mosaics executed over the following decade or so.

A pipit… by Gabriel Pippet.

Although we only live round the corner from the church and have been many times, we learned lots of new facts and features about the church and the artists. I have tried to photograph the mosaics a couple of times, but it’s hard to do them justice. Pippet also carved the beautiful capitals, altar and the (wooden) stations of the cross.

A real highlight of the evening was the chance to see the some of the original cartoons by the Solihull-born designer, artist and sculptor Gabriel Pippet, which were then so skilfully interpreted by mosaicists Maurice Josey and Fred Oates. Josey had worked on the Westminster Cathedral mosaics prior to this commission.

It is startling to realise how many local people do not realise this amazing art work is there. The fairly plain exterior of the church, which is modelled on a Roman basilica, doesn’t  give much away… Do go and see for yourself if you’ve not been. The Ravenna-style mosaics are a delight: here’s a slide show to give you a little taste of what awaits you…

The church is generally open during daylight hours.

2016 – rebooted

Well, that took me by surprise. It’s almost the end of January and I’ve not even wished you well for the New(ish) Year….

It’s been rather a downbeat start. We cancelled a visit to friends for New Year’s Eve as they were poorly. A few pictures from our not-so-riotous evening at home therefore make up this post – I confess it was actually very pleasant to have a selfishly indulgent time, though we missed the fun with friends, of course. Stewart made up his kit camera, a great present from daughter and we thoroughly enjoyed a home film night.

Family (and friends’)  illness has been the recurrent theme since then, unfortunately, along with the sad passing of some musical icons of my youth. 2016 could definitely do with a fresh start, so I’m officially declaring it New Year again now. Onward and upward!

Mystery Lady

My uncle and aunt found what they thought to be a daguerrotype when moving house recently and sorting through various belongings. I’ve scanned the rather too well-loved picture for them to see if my limited digital processing skills will let me restore her to some of her former glory.

Her case has long since lost its lid and the glass-based image itself (which I believe now to be an ambrotype, thanks to info from the National Media Museum blogspot, thank you Colin!) is rather badly damaged. However, she deserves a bit of attention I think, so here she is in the original, rather skew-whiff scan and my first very quick rough & ready edit (in Lightroom).

The mystery of who she is will also occupy us. Dating the picture should help whittle down potential family members. I do hope we can find out… Meanwhile our anonymous but intriguing guest will soon return home.
